#sucogsci November 2013: Book Discussion on UNGIFTED

Book club week is wrapping up here at Storytime Underground, with our final asynchronous question posted on the Facebook group this morning. We had our live Twitter chat last night with questions inspired by our book, Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined by Scott Barry Kaufman. If you couldn’t join us but want in on the convo, check out this Storify recap!

It’s Book Club Week!

It’s time for our week of discussion for the Storytime Undeground Book Club! Our discussion questions are inspired by Scott Barry Kaufman’s Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined: The Truth About Talent, Practice, Creativity, and the Many Paths to Greatness, and you can start discussing with your colleagues right away:

  • Asynchronous discussion began today on the Storytime Underground Facebook Group. A question will be posted there each morning this week, and anyone interested in participating in the discussion can join in there.
  • Live discussion will take place the evening of Thursday, November 14 on Twitter. We’ll plan to start discussion using the hashtag #sucogsci at 9 p.m. Eastern / 8 p.m. Central / 7 p.m. Mountain / 6 p.m. Pacific. The live discussion will last an hour, and a record of the Twitter chat will be posted to the Storytime Underground site after the discussion.

Book Club News: Discussion of Ungifted Starts Next Week!

Ungifted CoverSeveral weeks ago, we announced the next pick for the Storytime Undeground Book Club: Scott Barry Kaufman’s Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined: The Truth About Talent, Practice, Creativity, and the Many Paths to Greatness. The time to discuss this title is rapidly approaching; if you want to participate, make plans to read/skim/research the book this week. Discussion will proceed as follows:

  • Asynchronous discussion will begin on Monday, November 11 and continue through Friday, November 15 on the Storytime Underground Facebook Group. A question will be posted there each morning, and anyone interested in participating in the discussion can join in there.

If you’re curious what your guerrilla colleagues have to say about this title but haven’t read the book/don’t want to chime in yourself, feel free to lurk. Participation does not factor into your grade. You all get gold stars!

Let’s try this again, shall we? The Storytime Underground Book Club

After a slightly hiccuped first-go-round, the Storytime Underground Book Club is back with a vengeance. We’d like to announce our next book club selection, as well as the plan for both live and asynchronous discussion. Without further ado…

Ungifted CoverIf you’re interested in participating in the Storytime Underground Book Club, or if you just want to read along, you’ll want to get your hands on a copy of Scott Barry Kaufman’s Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined: The Truth About Talent, Practice, Creativity, and the Many Paths to Greatness. This title was selected from librarian Cate‘s great bookshelf stocked with titles relevant to cognitive science, children, and learning. Make plans to read/skim/research the book between now and mid-November, which is when discussion will take place in the following fashion:

  • Asynchronous discussion will begin on Monday, November 11 and continue through Friday, November 15 on the Storytime Underground Facebook Group. A question will be posted there each morning, and anyone interested in participating in the discussion can join in there.

We hope this new arrangement will work for anyone interested in participating in the Storytime Underground Book Club. If you’ve got questions, suggestions, or concerns, let us know in the comments or via e-mail here.

Well, that was a failure.

The inaugural live Google+ Hangout for the Storytime Underground Book Club crashed and burned. Or, rather, due to technical difficulties and Google+ Hangout idiosyncrasies, it never got off the ground. I don’t get it; Google+ Hangouts always work for John Green!

Kendra and I were finally able to live video chat using a Hangout, but since no one else was able to join us and you’re a whole lot more interesting than I am, we decided to reschedule for a date/time tba. Basically, the Storytime Undergound Joint Chiefs need to meet and figure out logistics that work for all of you. We have faith we’ll figure out something. We are, after all, guerrillas and ninjas.

In the meantime, please engage in some book discussion on our book using our earlier post or on Facebook. We’re very interested in what you have to say regardless of whether we get to hear your brilliance straight out of your lips via video chat.

Also, if you are more technologically savvy than we and would like to volunteer to school us, please do. You can get a hold of us here.
